CrossFit Journal Preview (journal.crossfit.com). Inside a 25-year-old family sports facility outside Pittsburgh is Integrated Fitness, a CrossFit box that does sport-specific training. The Bethel Park, Pa., box is more than 3000 square feet inside a building that includes a 4000-square-foot court for basketball hockey, soccer and volleyball. Originally, Integrated Fitness worked out of a 1100-square-foot space, says Jim Crowell, head trainer and one of the gym owners. “We wanted to do some sport-specific training on top of CrossFit, and we really wanted to take our CrossFit classes to a much bigger level and do a lot more things that would help us train a lot more effectively,” he says. Inside, the gym’s equipment includes many items typically used by powerlifters. With the variety of athletes training at Integrated Fitness—tennis players, football players, baseball players, mixed-martial-arts competitors, BMX racers—Crowell says the focus is on strengthening clients’ weaknesses. “We do … a lot of different lifts and special-exercise work,” says Crowell, who played tennis at Pennsylvania State University.
